Zipper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is very interesting to read the history of the zipper, and find out that the BF Goodrich Company played a part in the zipper being a popular fastening method. Not too surprisingly, the zipper really gained momentum in the fashion industry once it was promoted as a better way than buttons to fasten the front of men's trousers.
I doubt that velcro, although it has many great uses, is as widely used as the zipper. The thing I hate about velcro fasteners is they get all gummed up with thread and lint when put through the washer and dryer, they are noisy to open in a quiet setting, and they wear out. Especially on shoes. I hate buying cute children's shoes only to have the velcro straps wear out long before the shoes do.
