Autonomous Car Navigates the Streets of Berlin

Media_httpwwwscienced_rqxod

This car is amazing. It's what I have always dreamed of. It is completely autonomous, operating solely by sensors and an in-board computer. While there is a "safety driver" behind the steering wheel, he only monitors the car's behavior. I guess that's in case the car doesn't see a little kid crossing the street or something, and can slam on the brakes or swerve in time if necessary.

This "made in Germany" car is a Volkswagen Passat which has been modified for "drive by wire."

It was developed ty the AutoNOMOs Labs, and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Research gathered from this experiment will be used in the development of technology for driver assistance systems, and the innovation of new safety systems for conventionally driver-driven cars.
