How to Become a Tutor and Earn Extra Money

Become a tutor as a way to supplement your income

Everyone seems to be looking for a way to make extra money these days. Whether or not you already work a full-time or part-time job, a personal tutoring business could be just the thing you are looking for. Most tutoring is done in the evenings, because most students are at school during the day. Thus, tutoring becomes a job that can be done a few evenings a week or even on the weekends. You can be very flexible with the hours you choose to work each week as a tutor. You can set up your schedule to do tutoring a certain night each week, or Saturdays only; whatever fits your needs.

How to become a tutor without previous experience

If you are just starting out as a tutor, there are a couple of things you need to do to get started:

First, you will need to identify areas in which you have skills, talents, or experience. These are the subjects you will offer tutoring in. If you are a carpenter during the day, you could offer tutoring to students who are preparing to take the trades exam. If you are a stay at home mom, you could offer tutoring in a subject you did well in at school. If you are a university student, offer tutoring in a class you have taken and received a high grade. If you are uncertain, then offer tutoring for a skill such as fishing or skating. There's at least one thing you are good at that someone else would like to be good at too.

Second, you will need to find some willing subjects. This is very important as it will give you references to supply to prospective clients. Ask around to some people you know and offer to give them or their children some hours of free tutoring. Don't be skimpy on this step. This investment of time and effort will be worth it. Make sure to get testimonials and referrals from your willing subjects. Put them together in a nice format as references you can show prospective students and their parents.

Third, decide where you will do your tutoring. Would it work best if the student came to your house? How about if you went to the student's house? Alternately, you could book a room in the local library (usually free), or meet at a University or College close by. Make sure their library has places where its ok to talk quietly. If the student is young, be prepared for the parents to want you to come to their house for the tutoring sessions, at least for the first little while.

This article is a very informative piece which will help you in figuring out where to start in setting up your own tutoring business.

You can find lots more information on tutoring business here:

I have been searching for some information for tutors in Canada who wish to sign up with an agency and tutor online during the day, to home-schooled students.

After doing some research and checking with other fellow-tutors, this is what I decided to recommend:

http://www.findatutor.ca/

and

http://www.tutorindex.ca/

Now, just because I recommended these 2 doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of other good ones available. The best way for you to decide is to check out each one individually. See which is the best fit for you, which will work the best with you to start and expand your own tutoring business.

In parts of Canada the home-schooling trend has increased dramatically over the past few years. Many parents are looking for tutors to help out. Now, if you had planned on tutoring locally rather than tutoring online, you still have a lot of options.

Home school tutoring is a very satisfying and financially rewarding niche within the tutoring business.

There are so many new tutoring agencies popping up on the internet. Make sure you check them out thoroughly before signing up.

Phone the agency and talk to someone who is involved with all the workings of the business so you can ask lots of questions.

NaNo WriMo

Posted by Stephanie on October 31, 2010 in Uncategorized

NaNo WriMo is a world-wide challenge that happens between November 1st and 30th. It stands for National Novel Writing Month. Every person that signs up for it is tasked to write 50,000 words in those 30 days. A lot of you have probably already heard about this, but I wanted to write a post anyways.

As impossible as it sounds, there are hundreds of thousands of winners each year. As tomorrow is November 1st, a lot of people are having pre-noveling jitters (me included) and so I want you, my precious readers, to know that I am attempting this insane challenge for the first time, starting tomorrow.

The best thing about telling everyone you’re doing it is the motivation that comes from not wanting to look stupid if you don’t finish. It really helps when you don’t want to write and you think back to all those people counting on you to cross the finish line.

Good luck to everyone out there who is doing NaNo this year!

Wow! Did you see this blog post. NaNo WriMo...have you heard of that before. This sounds like an extremely interesting idea! In fact I think I would jump in with both feet if I wasn't already right in the thick of a big writing project for a new website I am trying to launch.

Tutoring as a stay at home job

Becoming a tutor as a way to earn extra money while staying at home can give you a great first or second income while you are helping someone else.

There are many students who need the help of a good tutor, and you likely have skills or experience which could benefit someone else.

If you are wondering how to become a tutor, then you should look at one of the many great and informative tutoring sites on the internet:

http://www.how-to-become-a-tutor.blogspot.com

http://www.beatutornow.com

Tutoring can be done at home in person, at home over the internet, or at the student's house, or even at a tutoring center.

Check out all the options and see which one works for you.

Brush and Floss Your Teeth

It is really important to brush and floss your teeth. Your adult teeth are irreplaceable. They work hard for you, chewing and preparing your food for digestion.
It is not fun to wear dentures. It is not a good trade-off to decide that you won't brush your teeth because you can always get dentures some day.

Talk to anyone who has to wear dentures and they will tell you. Brush your teeth now, while you have the chance to keep them.

Flossing is an important addition to the daily brushing routine. If dental floss has you feeling like you have all thumbs, then get those little plastic flossers.

I buy them at the dollar store. I get about 70 in a package for $1 and they work wonders.

Flossing - Dental Flossing Importance - Benefits Of Flossing

Is flossing necessary for my oral health?

It is surprising that only 12% of the population of a well developed country such as United States of America floss their teeth daily. Even more surprising is the fact that hardly anyone is aware of the necessity of flossing. Some are rather incorrectly inclined to believe that regular brushing is enough to keep their tooth healthy. Let me try enlightening you on the necessity of flossing for good oral hygiene.

A study was carried out 51 twins on the importance of flossing which published in American journal of periodontology (aug 2006). One of them was instructed to just brush and the other to brush and floss. Their dental health was examined before and after the study. The results showed the group that flossed had 38% fewer bleeding gum sites than before the intervention and overall gum bleeding improved by an average of 42%”

Some Flossing facts

  • Brushing sans flossing is comparable to cleaning only 65% of your body leaving the 35% dirty which simply means you are not completely clean.
  • Flossing removes the tiny trapped food particles and also the plaque trapped between the teeth which a tooth brush cannot reach.
  • It also prevents the formation of calculus or tartar which if formed can only be removed by your dentist.
  • Recent studies have indicated flossing reduces the risk of heart attack. Hard to believe? Well, this is attributed to the close relation between gum disease and heart attack. The gum disease is prevented by regular flossing which decreases the risk for heart attack.

What are the harmful effects of NOT Flossing?

If the advantages of flossing are not good enough to encourage you to start flossing, may be knowing the harms of not flossing might be more yielding.

  • The main objective of flossing is to remove the plaque lodged between the teeth. When this fails to occur, the plaque hardens in to tartar which can only be removed by an oral hygienist or dentist.
  • The bacteria present in the tartar (calculus) produce acids which damage your gums and cause swelling:- a condition known as gingivitis.
  • Untreated gingivitis leads to periodontal disease which eventually causes bone resoption and tooth loss.

So, do pickup this good habit which will improve your oral health for the good. Happy Flossing.

The statistic about the percentage of people who floss daily, in a well developed country, really surprised me.

Or maybe, it shouldn't. In my family of 8, I bet only 2 people floss daily (without me constantly reminding them), and even with reminders, I bet only 2 more people get it done daily. That's only half.

It's sad. I wish people had more knowledge about what causes tooth decay and gum disease, because then flossing would get the limelight it deserves, right up there with brushing and regular cleanings.

Breakfast cereal...I have a love-hate relationship with breakfast cereal.
I love that it is so quick; I hate that it is so expensive.
I love that it is so easy; I hate that it is usually nutrition-less.

So yes, you really do have to be picky about which one you choose.
Otherwise, you just aren't getting good nutritional value for your money.

Besides, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
We try to have a big cooked breakfast 90% of the time.

Baby Hair Clips - Children's hair clips, baby hair bows, barrettes, headbands, hair bow holders

This site has the cutest hair clips ever for baby girls. When my girls were babies, cute hair things were hard to find, and in fact, we often had to make our own.

So, now that I have grand babies coming, I am hoping to get a little girl to try these out on.

The thing is, the baby needs to have a little hair for it to work. What we used to do is put a little gel on the hair that you can gather into a little pony and then put the clip on. When the gel dries, the little bit of crunchy hair is harder for the pretty bow to slip off of.

Try it out. They look really cute.

Sour Cherry Preserves

Got lots of sour cherries? Then it's time to make jam or preserves, and bottle away some of that goodness for the winter.

Sour Cherry Preserves is the perfect answer for you.

Cherries are so healthy! They are overflowing with goodness and contain many beneficial nutrients to keep us healthy.

Not only that, but cherries are very yummy, too.

Have you ever tasted frozen cherries? My grandma used to freeze fresh cherries and then on a hot day we could get one and pop it in our mouth and let it melt. Then it would be so juicy and soft just like candy. I can remember it well.

Cherries make awesome pies as well.

I think cherry jam is one of my favorites. Fresh bread with cherry jam or even better, toast topped with cherry jam.

I think I need some now...

How to put a meal on the table quick.

It is very important in our busy life to be able to serve up an appetizing meal in a quick fashion. If you get in the habit of doing this one easy thing, you will become an expert at getting a  meal on the table in only minutes. Here's one habit you can start: as soon as you walk in the door, put a pot of water on to boil. Small pot for small family; larger pot for a large family. Practice will make perfect in judging how much water to use. Then, as you are getting ready to come in the kitchen, the water is well on its way to boiling. What can you do with boiling water? You can cook potatoes, rice, macaroni, spaghetti, hard-boiled eggs, use it for hot chocolate or herb tea, throw in bouillon cubes, some veggies and leftover meat for a quick soup. The possibilities are numerous. This one habit is your first step to having quick, easy, cheap meals.

Make it easy to get dinner done.

Dinner is something that has to happen every day, for the rest of your life. Whether you cook for yourself or a family, how can we make this job easier? Plan ahead. You can plan ahead by making a list of what dinner will be for the next week and making sure you have all the ingredients. You can plan ahead by cooking several meals in one day when you have time and then freezing them to eat later. You can also plan ahead by cooking some extra food every time you cook and then using that extra food for another meal later. Talk about easy! Some of the work is done already, with very little effort. It takes only a little more effort to make 2 meatloaves instead of 1 or make 2 batches of cookies instead of 1. Then these "planned-overs" can be put in the fridge or freezer to use later (or sooner; its up to you). This is your second step to having quick, easy, cheap meals.

You can save a lot on your food bill.

You can eat healthy, fun, nutritious food and save money at the same time. One great way to save money on your food bill is to try cooking with beans, peas and lentils. If you've never tried them, they are very delicious, filling, and a powerhouse of nutrition. Maybe you have had them before and didn't care for them. Try them cooked a different way. Scout around for a variety of recipes that use these healthy legumes as they are an excellent way to stretch your food dollar. You could make bean burgers, lentil loaf, or split pea soup as the main course and accompany it with some nice vegetables. When first trying out these foods, start out a little at a time. This is your third step to being able to prepare quick, easy, cheap meals.

Something we can all enjoy with a little practice

Crock Pot Venison and Game Recipes

Do you have a hunter in the family? Do you enjoy cooking and eating wild game once in a while, or often? I know some families that only eat venison, antelope or moose year-round.

I used to hate the thought of deer meat, because all I had ever had was so strong-tasting that I couldn't stomach it. It smelled and tasted like concentrated urine. Ugh!

Then last year we were given some deer pepperoni and some ground deer meat. I was reluctant to cook and taste it because of my bad experiences. But they assured me it wasn't strong and I would like it. Well to make a long story short, I loved it.

I wish I had more of it, in fact. It was the best thing I had ever tasted. So light and lean.

I guess its all in the way the animal is killed and dressed afterward.

Well whatever they did, they did it right.

If you have venison to enjoy this winter, try some of the recipes above. Enjoy.

More on About

With the weather turning chilly and winter approaching, it's time to break out the slow cookers, crock pots, or whatever you want to call them. Actually I use mine year-round but not as much in the summer as in the winter.

It is so comforting to have that pot slow-cooking some food all day long, and the thought of a bowl of chili or stew accompanied by a loaf of freshly made bread straight out of the bread machine just can't be beat.

In the morning, put on a pot of chili or stew in a large slow cooker. Then about 3 hours before the meal, throw some whole potatoes into another slow cooker. About 2 hours before the meal, throw a batch of bread dough into the bread machine (time it with how long your machine takes to bake the loaf of bread)

At meal time, cut open the potatoes and put 1/2 potato into each bowl. Cut randomly with a knife into smaller chunks. Top with chili and serve with hot bread.

Mmmm Mmmm Good!

Potato Biscuits

If you have mashed potatoes, it's time you tried this Tender Potato Biscuits recipe.

I found this recipe a few years ago, and I absolutely love it. The biscuits are tender and tasty, and my whole family loves them. When I make them it makes me feel like I am doing rustic baking in a wood stove on a farm in a one-room cabin or something. The smell permeates everything, and they taste heavenly with melted butter and some honey or jam on them. They taste just as good cold, and plain with nothing on them. They have enough flavor of their own.

I don't use white flour at all. I only use whole wheat flour. So, in the recipe I just swap whole wheat flour straight across for the white flour. Most of the time the dough is not too dry because I am generous with the measurement of mashed potatoes.

Try them and enjoy. You'll love them!

Tidbits of News

The situation in Haiti is heart-wrenching. Hundreds of children and elderly pour into St. Nicholas Hospital with cholera. The hospital is so full that triage areas are located outside on wooden benches. Aid organizations are assisting in this crisis, and you can read more about it here: CNN news.

Meanwhile scientists are trying to solve the prematurity puzzle. Why are some infants born premature? What other conditions do premature infants gain susceptibility to, like cerebral palsy or autism.

These are just interesting tidbits of news. It is good to keep up with what is happening in the world around us. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own little world that we are almost oblivious to what else is going on.

How can we help someone else today? Who is in need and what can we do to help?

Life sometimes is hard

Well, as much as we try to be happy all the time, life sometimes is hard. Like today when my daughter won't listen to me and then when the sewing project she's working on doesn't turn out the way she planned, she gets mad. Not at the project, but at me.

Patience is a virtue. I guess I need more. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait until it comes...Oh dear. I sound like a broken record.

This is a good article, one I need to take to heart:

5 Ways to Develop More Patience With Children

I have learned so many things on the internet, so many things that have been valuable to me.

Yes we need to be careful about what's out there, but if we search for the good, we will find it.

I love it that the knowledge of the entire world is literally at out fingertips.

Re-fried Beans

Yummy re-fried beans recipe. Do these yourself instead of buying a can. They taste way better!

Take 1 cup of cry pinto beans and rinse them.
Cover with water until your pressure cooker is 1/3 full or according to directions.
Chop onions and garlic and add.
Pressure cook until done and let pressure release by itself so that the skins don't split open

Strain and put in fridge overnight.

The next day, put olive oil in a pan and add beans. Mash and fry until hot, adding salt as needed.

This is delicious! Eat by themselves or in a tortilla shell. Add other ingredients as desired.

Here are some more fabulous bean recipes:

Enjoy!

Electric pressure cooker

If you are a cooker and lover of dried beans, you will get really excited about trying out an electric pressure cooker. Even when I used a stove-top pressure cooker to prepare beans for the last 20 years, I always pre-soaked my beans.

The instructions for my electric pressure cooker tell me that I don't have to pre-soak. Well this is very exciting, and I am going to try it out. In fact, I will convert all my old trusted and true recipes to electric pressure cooker recipes by following the instructions on the link in this sentence.

Today I have company coming over and with my 8 plus 2 more I will have 10 mouths to feed. I will be scouring the net in the next few minutes for a tasty recipe using pinto beans. That's what I am in the mood for. Maybe cooked with lots of onion and garlic. We'll have to see what comes up.

Sometimes I like to cook the pinto beans and then later mash them and fry in oil for my own homemade re-fried beans, but this time I want something different.

Tomorrow I will share what recipe I used, and how it turned out, so stay tuned...

For the love of the profile pen

I can't help it. This is the best pen I have ever, in my life, had the fortune to write with. In fact I have to have this pen or I don't want to write. I use it when I am tutoring students, when I am writing fantasy, and just for doodling with while talking on the phone. The pen is made by papermate and is the profile.

The motto for this pen is that it's the world's smoothest pen. And they are right. It is absolutely the smoothest pen to write with and it just flows out like cream. You have to try one. I can't explain it with mere words.

The ink comes in black, blue, green, purple, red and possibly other colors. The ink color on paper is rich and bold. None of this faint, splotchy, I-can-hardly-read-it stuff! I want my writing to show up and really be there!

So, next time you are shopping for a pen, please check out the papermate profile. I don't make any money from any of the sales, I just know a good pen when I see one!

Untitled

Halloween is approaching. It's the time of year for pumpkins, costumes, candy, and parties. Problem is, halloween is my most un-favorite holiday. I know, I know... I'm a party-pooper. But this is just the way it is. I don't like candy (love chocolate though!) and I think buying costumes is a colossal waste of money. I just tolerate halloween.

Here's a link for a site if you want to be like me and go REALLY cheap on your kids' halloween costumes:

http://www.coolest-homemade-costumes.com/#

Halloween is on Sunday this year. That makes it an even bigger groaner for me. Yes I know I am a halloween scrooge.

I did buy a face-painting kit for $5. There's enough paint in it to paint all 6 kids faces. I told them that it was my contribution to their halloween costumes and they had to come up with the rest of their costume themselves. They could either buy it with their newspaper delivery earnings, or find clothing/supplies around the house to fashion one out of. I would even help with sewing if needed. (Aren't I generous?)

Well, happy halloween! I can't wait until it's over again for one more year...

Brewsta, heading to Prague on 4/10. I'm looking to get into a restaurant kitchen to shot food for my blog: Portlandtown.blogspot.com. Do you think I could just walk in and ask or do you know someplace good that you could get me into a kitchen? I have found a restaurant in Paris but still looking for Prague and Budapest.

A couple of suggestions: Kogo at Slovansky dum is a big Mediterranean place with a big open kitchen. Hard to say if they'd say OK, but there's a lot of action there.

Or for something more modest, Little Whale in Mala Strana is a 7-table restaurant with a kitchen the size of a walk-in closet. The chef, Jason LeGear, is super friendly and probably wouldn't mind a few photos.

Peggy makes a good point regarding family friendlness. Obviously finding places that are overtly friendly to anyone here is getting easier and hopefully the "smoking section law" that just came in will help with the family factor.

Pizza Grosetto (at least the one at Dejvicka; not sure about the others) and Pizza Nuovo (upstairs next to Kotva) are two that sping to mind that have kiddie areas specifically and fairly decent food.

Buffalo Bill's on Vodickova always gives drawing paper and crayons to the tykes (and they eat for free!), though I haven't been there in ages. TGIF & Hard Rock Cafe also do the drawing stuff and have kid's menus, though you'll probably not want to head there on your holiday!

Just a few off the top of head, if a not very comprehensive list.

Maybe a bit late to add a comment. I eat out a lot with my children every summer when in the Czech Republic. Regarding family friendly dining in the Czech Republic I have certain rules:

In Prague only go to American chain restaurants or restaurants that serve only traditional Czech food. Hooters is VERY family friendly. The Original Pilsner restaurant in Dejvice was full of families with kids last Saturday. Go straight to the back after entering.

Outside Prague NEVER go to a restaurant that doesn't display a Pilsner Urquell sign or umbrellas. It's the Good-housekeeping seal of approval. (You can bend this one if you're in a familiar place.)

Make sure your children know what they want within the first minute after you sit down. They should have a second choice in mind in case the server says "bohozel"

In small villages, restaurants often have a completely empty dining room adjacent to the crowded smoke-filled tap room. look for the door with the sign above it(jidelna) and just ask.

Try to order something off the chalkboard. It will be faster, easier and fresher.

Hope this helps.

I can't get the link for you but you can copy and paste into your browser or browse the comments below.

The dialogue is especially interesting about finding family-friendly dining establishments when traveling abroad.
